Scholastic Bowl is like something that you would see on a TV game show. Trivia questions are asked of two teams and they race to be the first to answer them. The teams have to answer different categories of questions. There are five people on a team, and one of them is the captain. The captain answers the bonus questions (more on that later). People who are not currently playing sit out until a time out is called and they are substituted into the game. The coaches this year are Ms. Foreman and Mrs. Grandt.

Scholastic Bowl is a very simple sport, but the rules seem complicated when you try to explain them. Each school has a team of five people, the other people on the team sit on the side lines until they are substituted in. One of the players is the captain. The captain sits in the middle and answers the bonus questions. Anyone can answer the toss-ups. To answer the questions, you get these nifty little buzzers and you can push the red button to "buzz in".
|
Type of Question |
What it is |
|
Toss-up |
Question where only a single person on the team answers. Worth ten points. You are normally given 15 seconds but 30 is allowed for math questions. No talking is allowed during a toss-up. They are worth 10 points each. If your team gets the toss-up wrong no one on the team is allowed to try to answer the question again. The other team is still allowed to answer until the end of the time limit. |
|
Bonus |
The captain answers these questions. There are three, four or five parts. Each part is worth a certain amount of points. They all add up to twenty points. The team writes their answers on paper and hands it to the captain. The captain answers based on those answers and his own. Talking is allowed during a bonus. |
Here are the main rules:
No talking during and between questions except for bonuses.
When you "buzz in", you have to wait for the moderator to call on you.
Violation of this rule results in half of the points deducted if the answer is correct.
Once a team's score reaches over three hundred, the team has won the game.
Toss-ups are worth 10 points and the contestants are given 15 seconds to answer, unless it is math, in which 30 seconds are given.
The bonuses are worth 20 points total with multiple parts, and the teams are given 30 seconds to answer.
The captain answers this question and the team is allowed to converse to answer these.
After the team gets a toss-up correct they are allowed to attempt to answer the bonus question before the other team.
